Netflix changed its policies on its apps recently, which no longer allow casting its content to a large number of newer television sets and streaming devices via its mobile devices. Customers who used to cast regularly on their smartphones to their televisions now have to browse Netflix directly on the remote. This transformation has led to frustration by the viewers who found mobile casting to be convenient in terms of browsing, scrubbing episodes, and returning to shows.

Casting Still Works for Older Devices

As per the support page of Netflix, the feature of casting is going to keep working on older Chromecast devices and television sets that are compatible with Google Cast, though only with subscribers who have an ad-free account.

The casting feature does not seem to be visible in the Netflix app anymore to individuals using newer devices, such as Google TV Streamer, Chromecast with Google TV, or televisions powered by Android TV. Some users complained that despite the recent updates in mobile apps the cast button stopped recognizing compatible devices.

Why Netflix Is Removing Casting Support

Netflix has indicated that the company will sometimes drop features that are not popular. In the case of newer devices, it appears that casting fits this group. This action is comparable to Netflix in 2019 that decided to cancel AirPlay support because of technical constraints. As the company keeps on increasing its functionality features, some of its old or unused features are eliminated to simplify operations and concentrate on those areas that affect more users.

Impact on User Experience

The removal of mobile casting may inconvenience many viewers who preferred navigating Netflix from their smartphones. Using a TV remote to browse shows, adjust playback, or resume content can be slower and less intuitive compared to a mobile device. For example, scrolling to a specific point in a long episode or film is easier on a phone than with a TV remote, making the viewing experience less flexible.

What Users Can Do

Netflix suggests using the in-built applications on the TV or the remote controls as an alternative to the affected individuals. Older Chromecast devices or ad-free subscribers can also proceed with mobile casting where it is available. Due to their usual application, it is important to continuously update the Netflix app in order to be compatible with the available devices, as well as available features introduced by the platform.
