Perplexity is stepping into the browser space with Comet, its own AI-driven web browser. Launched in July 2025, Comet is now slowly making its way to more users, including those in India. Not only this, the company has even been in talks with smartphone makers to get Comet pre-installed on devices, though those discussions are still in progress.
But what exactly is it, and how does it work?
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas recently announced that Comet is now available for Windows and macOS users in India. At the moment, access is limited to Perplexity Pro subscribers, so free-tier users won’t be able to try it just yet.
For Android, Comet has been listed on the Google Play Store for pre-registration, though there’s no confirmed launch date. The iOS version, meanwhile, hasn’t shown up on the App Store, suggesting it may take longer to arrive. Interestingly, Airtel has tied up with Perplexity to give its customers a free year of Perplexity Pro, which also includes access to Comet.
Comet isn’t your regular browser – it’s built to make browsing smarter and more interactive. Instead of constantly switching between tabs and apps, the AI takes care of the busy work for you.
The sidebar assistant can answer questions, summarise pages, and even handle tasks like sending emails or booking services. Then there’s the agentic feature, which lets you compare products across sites, draft messages, or make purchases, all just by giving instructions in text. What makes it feel intuitive is its contextual awareness. The AI looks at what’s on your screen and gives relevant suggestions, so it actually understands what you’re doing. It also helps manage workflows, whether you’re researching, comparing products, or juggling multiple tasks at once.
Right now, Comet is available only to Pro subscribers, but as more features roll out and the mobile version launches, it could soon become a big part of how people use AI in everyday browsing.
