Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, is again making waves with one of its bold moves. The tech giant has opened up free access to its latest AI model, Grok 4. The AI model is available for free for users around the globe. The decision marks a significant shift from its initial rollout, where only SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers could use the Grok 4 for free. The announcement comes days after OpenAI unveiled its GPT-5, suggesting a major rivalry between the AI competitors.
To recall, Grok 4 was initially only reserved for the SuperGrok and X Premium subscribers. But it seems Elon Musk-owned xAI has lifted these restrictions, and hence, is allowing everyone to try the model without a subscription.
Nevertheless, the company’s most powerful variant, dubbed Grok 4 Heavy, is still available after subscriptions. The company says they are allowing ‘generous usage limits’ to let users explore the full capacity and capabilities of the Grok 4.
Grok 4 is available in two distinct modes, including Auto and Expert. The Auto Mode lets AI decide when a prompt requires deeper reasoning. This makes it more efficient and faster. On the other hand, the Expert Mode allows users to manually activate advanced reasoning if users are looking for more detailed answers.
xAI launched Grok Imagine last week, which is a video generation tool and is free to users in the United States. The feature is already facing controversy after reports of it creating explicit celebrity videos have been reported. Outside the US, paid subscribers enjoy higher usage limits, keeping the premium tier attractive for power users.
Elon Musk, in his recent discussion on X, mentioned that ads will soon appear directly inside the Grok chatbot interface, including both website and in the mobile app. These ads will appear between answers, creating a new revenue stream to offset the cost of the powerful GPUs needed to run Grok.
