The popular audio streaming service, Spotify, has announced the return of its messaging feature. This will enable both free and premium users to chat and share music directly within the app. The feature will roll out this week on mobile devices for users aged 16 and above in the selected market.

By reintroducing this feature, the company aims to make music sharing more social and engaging, while keeping pace with its rivals.

Comeback of Messaging Feature on Spotify

Interestingly, the messaging feature was introduced 8 years ago on Spotify, but decided to remove it was removed in 2017 due to low engagement. Nevertheless, the platform grew massively, gaining millions of users worldwide over the past few years. The app has 696 million monthly users reported in the second quarter of 2025, and hence, making the company believe that now is the right time to bring back its messaging feature on the platform.

Why Spotify Is Relaunching Messaging

Spotify decided to bring back its messaging feature after facing intense competition from Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube. By adding new features, the Swedish streaming giant tries to hold on to its current user base, along with attracting new listeners.

The company has been raising subscription prices to boost revenue, but it also needs features that enhance user experience to balance growth and profitability.

Spotify Growth in Current Years

Spotify has been expanding beyond music streaming, and hence, the platform has heavily invested in podcasts and video content. In addition, the company also introduced partner programs that allow creators to earn money.

The company now aims to combine music, podcasts, and social interaction, all in one place. For users, it means sharing songs and playlists is easier than ever, and for Spotify, it could be the boost it needs to reach its ambitious growth goals.
