Story Highlights

  • It will be released by Meta in 2025.
  • Telegram and Viber have not given the approval to the same yet.

WhatsApp is getting a new feature that will allow users to access third-party messaging services and apps via the same. Meta shared in a blog post that it is building notifications into WhatsApp and Messenger to notify users about third-party integrations and alert them when a newly compatible third-party messaging application joins the race.

Furthermore, it has also been said that Meta is going to release an onboarding flow in Messenger and WhatsApp to let the users know more about the third-party chats and switch them on at their convenience. From the onboarding flow, the users can set up a dedicated folder for third-party messages and can even opt for a combined inbox.

Meta third party chat integration details

Meta will roll out the functionality for both WhatsApp and Messenger by 2025. According to the plan shared by Meta, the company will be launching a rich messaging feature for third-party chats like direct replies, read receipts, typing indicators, and reactions. As of now, the feature will only launch in Europe. WhatsApp has not announced anything about the launch of the feature on a global level. However, we can expect to see third-party integrations on a global level as well.

At this point in time, there is no confirmation regarding the support from Viber and Telegram. Moreover, the feature could also get restricted with the end-to-end encryption of WhatsApp as it will be difficult for the app to offer the same feature for all third-party applications it allows integration. As for Meta, the company is trying to meet all the obligations of the messaging-related clauses under the Digital Markets Act (DMA) of the European Commission.
