SpaceX, with Elon Musk as its leader, is geared to enter the Indian internet market with Starlink satellite-based connectivity in the limelight. As the company intends to transform the experience in rural broadband and redefine historical approaches to it, the launch of Starlink may make such giants as Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel rebuild their long-term strategies.

Plans and Investments:

Starlink is expected to put in about 700 to 750 low-earth orbit (LEO) positioned satellites with special consideration to India. How much would it cost to invest? An enormous amount of Rs 8,000 crore which involves launching satellites costing roughly one million dollars each and which are expected to last 7-8 years. In addition to that, it will probably incur an annual cost of operation equivalent to Rs 350 crore. Such investment scale shows the level of strong dedication of Starlink to the Indian market and especially remote areas of the country with underdeveloped populations.

Pricing:

The customer premise equipment (CPE) is sold at approximately 400 dollars nowadays, though by local production the price might be potentially reduced by a half. In order to promote uptake, Starlink can provide leasing or subsidised services. Prices may initially be high at say Rs 11,250 per subscriber per month in case take up is small. But at a scale of 2.5 million users estimated, the prices would plummet to as little as Rs 450 a month, showcasing a business with a promise of volume and price elasticity in the long-term.

Availability

Starlink will be launched in stages with initial plans offered at early adopter prices of approximately 20- 25 dollars a month and a long-term target of mass market rates at closer to 10 dollars a month. Besides, Starlink also considers the B2B and B2G connections, such as connectivity services to rural projects with government funds and enterprise solutions in inaccessible areas.

Airtel and Jio

The real impact will be seen in home broadband. Currently dominated by JioFiber and Airtel Xstream, this segment could face a shake-up if satellite internet becomes more affordable. Although not an immediate threat to mobile operations, Starlink’s presence introduces a compelling alternative for households in rural and semi-urban regions that remain underserved by fiber or cable networks.
