Meta is adding a new feature for Quest 3 and Quest 3S users that lets you scan your real-world room and transform it into a virtual replica. The feature is powered by Hyperscape Capture, which is now rolling out gradually in beta. All it takes is a few minutes of scanning with your headset, after which the data is processed in the cloud. The rendering itself takes a few hours, but once done, you can step back into a digital copy of your space. Using the headset, you simply walk around your room as the app overlays a mesh to show what’s being scanned. After the scan, the room is uploaded for processing, and later, you’ll be able to revisit it in VR. For now, the captured spaces are private, meaning you can only explore them on your own. Meta says a future update will allow sharing through a private link, so others can join in too. Also Read: Amazon To Bring Its FIRST AR Glasses To Rival Meta? All We Know So Far
Meta has already showcased some recreated environments through Hyperscape. These include Gordon Ramsay’s kitchen in L.A., Chance the Rapper’s sneaker room, and even the UFC Apex Octagon in Las Vegas. The scans are impressively realistic, though if you zoom in too close, some details like text or small objects may not look perfect. Still, the sense of stepping into a real space in VR is already quite immersive. Also Read: Apple Joins Meta, Microsoft In AI Copyright Controversy: Is iPhone-Maker Training AI With Authors' Books?
Alongside Hyperscape, Meta also announced a lineup of new VR games, including Deadpool VR, Star Wars: Beyond Victory, and Demeo x Dungeons & Dragons: Battlemarked. Its Horizon TV app is also expanding with support for Disney+, ESPN, and Hulu, while a deal with Universal and Blumhouse will bring horror movies like M3GAN and The Black Phone with VR effects.
The rollout of Hyperscape is limited to users 18 years and older with Quest 3 or Quest 3S headsets. While it’s still early days, Meta clearly sees recreating real spaces as an important step in making VR more personal and practical. The ability to invite friends into your scanned spaces could be what makes it even more engaging in the near future.
