Google I/O 2026 was packed with AI announcements

Google used its I/O 2026 keynote to show off a long list of AI updates. The event included new Gemini models, upgrades for Search and Gmail, Android XR glasses, and other AI features that Google plans to bring to more of its apps later this year. Google also showed new experiences like Gemini Omni video generation and voice-based Gmail search, many of which will arrive across Google services.

Gemini 3.5 becomes faster and smarter

Google introduced Gemini 3.5 Flash, which is now the default model for the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search. The company says it is faster, better at coding and agentic tasks, and capable of generating richer web UIs. Gemini 3.5 Pro is expected to launch next month. Google also refreshed the Gemini app with new animations, colours, fonts, and haptic feedback.

Gemini Omni can create videos from multiple inputs

Google also launched Gemini Omni, a new family of AI models. Its first model, Omni Flash, can generate videos using text, photos, audio, and even existing video clips. That makes it more flexible than Veo, which mainly focuses on text-to-video generation. It is rolling out through the Gemini app, Google Flow, and YouTube Shorts.

Gemini Spark is Google’s always-on AI agent

Google introduced Gemini Spark, an AI assistant that runs continuously in the background using Google Cloud virtual machines. Powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash, it can write emails, create study guides, track hidden credit card fees, and connect with Workspace apps like Gmail, Docs, Sheets, and Slides. It also supports third-party apps including Canva and Instacart.

Google AI Studio can build Android apps with prompts

Google now allows users to create full Android apps using prompts in Google AI Studio. The platform includes an embedded Android emulator for previews and testing. Users can install apps directly on phones, export them to Android Studio or GitHub, or save them as ZIP files. Support for Firebase integration and private app sharing is also planned.

Android XR audio glasses are coming this fall

Google showcased updated Project Aura smart glasses developed with Xreal. The redesigned compute puck now features a fingerprint sensor and wearable lanyard.
