Sony might be gearing up to make a grand comeback into the handheld gaming space. A new leak hints that the company is working on a Nintendo Switch-style hybrid device that will launch alongside the PlayStation 6. Unlike the PlayStation Portal, which only streams games from a PS5, this rumoured PS6 handheld is expected to run PlayStation titles natively making it a true portable console. AMD APU at the Core

The leak comes from Moore's Law is Dead, a YouTube channel that often shares reliable gaming hardware scoops. According to documents the channel claims to have seen, the PS6 handheld could be powered by an AMD APU codenamed "Canis." • Four Zen 6c CPU cores for gaming.
  • Two additional Zen 6 low-power cores for system operations.
  • 16 RDNA 5 compute units handling graphics, clocked at 1.2GHz in handheld mode and up to 1.65GHz when docked.

On top of that, the device may support up to a whopping 48GB of LPDDR5X RAM on a 192-bit memory bus. Extras like a MicroSD slot, M.2 SSD slot, touchscreen, haptics, and dual mics are also said to be part of the package.

Nintendo Switch-Style Docking

Just like the Nintendo Switch, the PS6 handheld is tipped to plug into a dock for big-screen play. Backwards compatibility is expected too, meaning players could potentially enjoy PS4 and PS5 libraries on the go.

Performance-wise, the leak claims that in docked mode, the PS6 handheld might even outperform a base PS5 in games optimised for it thanks to AMD's FSR 4 upscaling. For non-patched titles, performance may land a bit lower, but still impressive for a portable system.

PS6 Handheld Price and Release Window (Expected)

Sony is reportedly targeting a price between $399 and $499 (around Rs 35,000 Rs 44,000). That would put it right in line with the Nintendo Switch 2, priced at $449.99 (around Rs 39,700).

Production is rumoured to kick off in mid-2027, with a launch window in Fall 2027 matching the timeline speculated for the PlayStation 6 console.

A Return to Portable Play?

While Sony hasn't said a word officially, whispers about a new handheld have been circulating for over a year. Bloomberg and Digital Foundry have both suggested Sony was testing prototypes capable of running PS5 games natively.

For now, the PlayStation Portal remains Sony's only handheld option, but it's more of a companion device than a standalone console. If these leaks pan out, the PS6 handheld could be the company's first real step back into portable gaming since the PS Vita.
