Sam Altman Launches OpenAI’s Sora 2 App With AI-Powered Video Creation

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced the launch of a new app, Sora, powered by the company's latest model, Sora 2. The app is designed to make it simple for anyone to create, share, and watch AI-generated videos, much like how ChatGPT opened up text-based creativity.
Sora 2 is the next step in OpenAI's video generation work. Sam Altman explains that it has been built to create more realistic clips. For example, if a basketball shot misses, the ball now bounces off the backboard instead of teleporting into the hoop, the teaser showed. The Sora 2 model can also handle multiple shots in a single prompt, keep a consistent scene, and work across different styles like anime, cinematic, or realistic visuals.
Beyond visuals, Sora 2 can generate sound effects, background audio, and speech that sync with the mood of the video. It even allows real objects and people to be added into a generated clip, pushing video creation beyond simple animation.
The Sora App
Alongside the model, OpenAI is introducing a social app for iOS. With it, users can upload themselves into videos through a feature called cameos. This means you can insert your likeness-or even your friends-into different AI-generated scenes. To make this work, the app requires a one-time verification using video and audio.
The app also includes tools for creating, remixing, and sharing content in a feed that feels similar to TikTok or Instagram Reels. At launch, Sora will be free to explore, though OpenAI may charge for extra video generations during high demand.
Altman has mentioned that while Sora opens exciting possibilities for creativity, it also raises concerns. The app could become addictive, and features like cameos might be misused for harmful content. To address this, OpenAI is adding safeguards, such as checks against deepfake misuse, parental controls, and well-being monitoring.
The company says it will continue experimenting with ways to ensure the app helps users achieve meaningful goals-whether that's connecting with friends, learning new skills, or simply relaxing with creative content.
Sora App Availability
The Sora app is starting its rollout on iOS in the U.S. and Canada, with expansion to other regions planned soon. ChatGPT Pro users may also get access to the Sora 2 Pro model.
