Touchscreen on a MacBook? That may soon be a reality. According to well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the company’s first OLED MacBook Pro could also feature touch support. If true, it would be a major shift for Apple, which has long kept its laptops and iPads separate in terms of functionality. As per the analyst, the upcoming MacBook Pro is tipped to use OLED panels with on-cell touch technology. In simple terms, this means the touch sensors are directly built into the display instead of being added as a separate layer. Apple’s rumoured decision is also said to be inspired by iPad usage trends, where touch controls help users in certain productivity scenarios. So when will you see it? Reports suggest that mass production of the OLED MacBook Pro could begin by late 2026, with a launch window stretching into early 2027. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has previously mentioned that the OLED models may arrive alongside newer Apple chipsets, either the M6 or even M7, depending on Apple’s update cycle.
This could also mean Apple releasing two MacBook Pro refreshes within the same year, something it has done before. For example, in 2023, Apple pushed out both M2 Pro/Max models and then M3 versions later that year.
Apart from the Pro lineup, Apple is also said to be working on a more affordable MacBook. This one might launch earlier, possibly in late 2025, and could use an iPhone-class chip like the A18 Pro. But unlike the Pro, this budget-friendly model is not expected to get touchscreen support in its first version.
If these reports turn out to be true, the OLED MacBook Pro could bring several long-awaited upgrades – a slimmer body, vibrant OLED screen, smaller notch, and now touch support. For users who switch between iPad and Mac, this might finally bring the best of both worlds into one device.
