Remember Freedom 251? How Rs 251 phone scam unfolded and folded

A company called Ringing Bells launched the world's cheapest smartphone.

The Freedom 251 was launched in 2016 to a bumper fanfare around the world.

The company gave hopes to people who could not afford expensive smartphones back then.

The company said Rs 251 was introductory price while the original price was Rs 500.

Mohit Goel, the company's director, claimed the bookings of the phone crashed the website.

Later, it was found that the phone was nothing but a Chinese smartphone with Freedom 251 logo.

After initial deliveries, no phones were shipped while the company promised to refund the booking amount.

Goel was later arrested for fraud and the dream of a Rs 251 phone never came to reality.
