Apple still working on reverse charging feature for future iPhone models

Even though the iPhone has supported wireless charging for a while now, it still does not let you charge accessories or phones wirelessly. Reverse wireless charging on the iPhone is one of the highly demanded features and rumours have suggested that Apple is currently working on making this feature a reality. In fact, Apple hoped to debut the feature with the iPhone 14 Pro series last year but it missed the deadline. So now, Apple is reportedly continuing with its work on reverse charging in the hope to introduce the feature later this year. According to 9To5Mac, Apple has deputed engineers to develop bilateral wireless charging (reverse wireless charging) along with software optimisations that will facilitate the use of the feature. Apple has been developing the feature for a while but has not been able to implement it so far. Filings on the FCC website have suggested that the iPhone 12 included wireless charging hardware but the feature was never enabled. Last year's iPhone 14 Pro series was supposed to offer reverse wireless charging but Apple missed the deadline and decided to go ahead with the launch without the feature. However, despite engineering delays, Apple is continuing with its work on reverse wireless charging, which we may see on future iPhone models. The reason for the delay is not clear, but the report said that the work on the reverse wireless charging also includes something called "wireless power out," which is likely the software for the bilateral wireless charging feature. This firmware, which is reportedly a "major aspect of the ongoing testing and engineering" would allow the iPhone to manage the charging speeds, heat dissipation, and charging efficiency between the iPhone and the device that is being charged. The crucial part of the reverse wireless charging feature of the iPhone is the ability to manage the charging speeds since this is likely what has been the cause of the delay in the implementation so far. So, if Apple manages to succeed, we might see future iPhone models come with reverse wireless charging. But there is also the possibility of the feature getting scrapped altogether in the event Apple fails to achieve what it has sought.
